A Fool and the World; Video

Elizabeth had been watching the identity crises that had been happening for the week and firstly, she was not suffering through one being spared the fake identity, secondly her own identity was something she was still figuring out so it all seemed odd to her. Still many people were upset, so she had given it some time before posing her question.

"People of this place, I admit that being spared some of the more odd parts of living the lie that was pushed on us a few weeks ago I am uncertain how to ask this but I shall try."

She takes a breath and nods.

"What about you is defined by you internally, and what about you is defined by the world around you? Is it all one? Is that why the previous lie was so difficult for many to see, or is there something different, like the fire that was stoked in many by the spirits that ran rampant when I came here? I myself am a bit confused by all of this and would appreciate any help. That and while I no longer have access to the many rewards for assistance from home and can offer little more than appreciation for help, still hope that kindness is a form of currency that has not been erased from this place."

"That makes sense. I admit my sister and I are fairly different as well even though we were created for the same purpose."

She lets out a breath and shakes her head a bit.

"Honestly I have just been trying to understand the reactions people have had, having very little experience with these things makes it hard to understand why such a short lie seems to have caused so many people so much pain."

Daria glances away from the screen for a moment while she picks her words. For whatever reason, this person on the other end of the video is acting like they're even less sociable than her.

"Families are supposed to be important," she says. "So something messing with that is pretty wrong. Just give them some time to deal with it."

"I see. While I would be most upset if someone were to hurt my poor little brother, or cause my older sister pain, I left them to find the first human I met. Really, living in a world with so many is.... Confusing."

She sighs.

Right. A world with humans is confusing.

"So what do you think you are?" She's heard all of them by now, really. Robots, gods, magical girls like some Japanese TV show, you name it.

"I don't know. I am Elizabeth of the Velvet Room. I was created to help my master aid those who had signed contracts with fate but I left that all behind, and somehow don't think that I could be that anymore."

"Who are you, and what do you want are two of the questions I need to figure out I have been told."

Sounds pretty kinky. Might want to check the BDSM shops first. Or vaguely demonic. Either way, Daria's not particularly investing herself in something that far-out.

She'll start with the part that does make sense. "Those are things you're going to have to figure out for yourself."

"Yes! I know, but unlike home, there are more than.... Three others. Many different roads, many different ideas. Did you know that upon my first emerging in this world, someone was threatening people with a weapon known as a fashion club? I had not even pondered turning an abstract into a blunt object, yet it was done here. So I seek guidance from those who have more experience. Even in the extremely absurd."

Quinn's fashion club is haunting Daria in another entirely different world (supposedly). Lovely.

"It's a threat, alright, but it's not a weapon. They just dress each other up and sit around reading fashion magazines."

"And they make it sound so dangerous simply to hide how banal it is? That sounds rather deceitful. Still, it is the things like that that I do not quite get."

"It's not deceitful," Daria admits that much at least, "It's just a homonym. The word has two different meanings. One is the weapon, one is a group of people who do an activity together, like playing a sport or a hobby."

"I have heard of these sports and hobbies. Clubs are like that. I will remember that. Still, these are things that define a person as well? Or simply those who are similar bond together?"

Well, Quinn's fashion club definitely gathered together the most petty and superficial... She can't help thinking that even if Quinn's definitely not the worst of them.

"I'd say it's similar people," Daria says dryly.

So that is how people define themselves, still, that holds no interest at all to Elizabeth so she pauses for a bit.

"Perhaps if there was such a group that was devoted to something more.... No.... Less."

She pauses looking for words.

"Is there such a group more concerned with finding out why humanity can be so frustrating despite what they are?"

Frankly, humanity is frustrating because they're obnoxious.

"No one's figured that one out even after thousands of years of philosophy. You could try taking a few classes, if there was a university here." It could actually be interesting.

"People look for their answers in religion, too, but it doesn't always make them better people. Regardless of what they claim to believe." Mostly because they don't act in accordance with those beliefs.

"I see, does this place have anything like a university? I know my guest went to a place called High School. I got to see it once, but it seemed very busy and chaotic, perhaps too much for proper learning."

She pauses again before continuing. She wears several gods and angels as persona, and understands that they were created by the collective consciousness of man, but none of them quite understand the entire big picture.

"As for religion.... I have met gods and they frequently go on about the hippocracy of mortals while paying little heed to their own. Perhaps that is really the only constant between the various realms."

"No. There's a school, but it doesn't teach philosophy. Maybe they're afraid of what people will suddenly realize." She's been here way too long to still think it all can't be real, but she's pretty darn sure if this place can pull off a mass hallucination like those families, it can mess with them a lot of other ways, too.

"If you want to learn more about how people think, why not study it on your own? The library probably has some books. But you're still going to get your best material by people-watching."

"That is what I have been doing. I spend most of the time at the fountain in town trying to figure out people. Still, sometimes it is best so simply ask as opposed to watch. There are different gaps both fill, still I wonder how many lifetimes that sort of understanding will take."

"That depends on how high your tolerance is for people." Personally, Daria would rather study and people-watch than spend time talking to most of them. Her friends are few and far between, and while she'd like to feel more accepted, sure (who wouldn't?), she's pretty comfortable with the fact this means the friends she does have are people she can respect.

"I am still discovering what that is. I would like to like people, but they are confusing and rarely move in ways that make sense to me. Still they have an imagination that I lack and my master spoke very highly of them."

She lets out a breath and shakes her head again. Elizabeth understands to some degree that free will implies people will be random, but all in all she's uncomfortable with some of the stupid things she's seen and the constant allowance of ennui and such being the driving factor of so many.

Great. The person who actually makes sense right now definitely doesn't think very much like most people. Daria needed more confirmation that everyone's right and she's a freak. On the other hand, it means she does get where Elizabeth's coming from.

"Some of them aren't so bad," she says, in the same way she'd probably even defend Quinn to an outsider. "Just find the ones who think once in awhile."

Elizabeth wanted to like humans, really, there was one who she did and he gave his life for the others so they weren't all bad in her book. They just drove her a little nuts sometimes.

"I know. I would have stayed where I was if there were not some worth caring about. I left to help one, I was told he was here too, but is no longer. A shame at that too."

Daria was human. She just didn't like people a lot of the time.

"If someone's gotten out of here, I don't think he's the one you need to worry about," she pointed out. She'd been looking for a way out for... nine months or so now. Weird to think it was that long.

"Is this an inescapable prison then? Time is something that does not concern me so I simply thought it was a matter of waiting till the masters here either made an error or died."

"Anyone who's gotten out sure hasn't bothered telling the rest of us how first," Daria tells Elizabeth. She ignores the part about the masters or whatever, because a bunch of overfed guys in suits, with agendas that would make her school principal proud, aren't really people she respects either.

Still, Elizabeth was told Minato was here and is no longer here so escape is possible.

"But people have left?"
