Elizabeth peers into her journal, with what could ALMOST be considered a look of concern on her face as she furrowed her brow slightly. Since she lost most of her power she no longer is certain that she can simply one shot sure kill Erebus were he to appear here and this has caused some concern.

"This celebration that I see being prepared for. The one to bring forth one of the many Messiah figures in the darkest of times. It is not in reality a celebration of ennui designed to wake Nyx from her slumber or to feed Erebus? I have noted on my world much of the food of Erebus comes at this time of year and I remember my first guest had to stop the awakening of Nyx now."

She shakes her head slightly, "If that is so there are other ways. Oblivion is not a good choice and while things seem dark feeding the beasts that would destroy the wall and end the pain is a bad solution. While I do not have the proper materials here to give quests to break the tedium here, I perhaps can assist in thinking of other ways to pass the time than oblivion? I have even seen children roped into this, please, perhaps I could..... Find a game?"

A beast inside you that feeds on despair? That sounds pretty creepy...

"Well, one that lives in the hearts of humans. I do not know what I am other than an Avatar of Power, but I am not certain my soul helps provide the sea of the soul with more substance."

Does every human have this beast inside their heart? Um, I mean in your world, because I've never heard of anything like that in other worlds before. I think someone would have mentioned it if it were true in other places.

"The beast is one of the primal gods of the world or worlds I watched over. Every human has a link to its mate, Death, in their hearts and through this they can feed it."

So... they feed this beast despair through the link in their hearts and make it stronger. That makes sense, I guess. I mean, it's still creepy, but I think I understand how it works.

What happens when they feed it enough? Will it wake up?

"No, it has all ready been woken. I have killed it...."

She looks at her hand and counts her fingers, "Three times now? But despair heals it, and when it is at full strength it will again attack the barrier that keeps it from awakening death."

There isn't any way to stop it for good? Or will it always exist so long as people have despair in their hearts?

[He's pretty sure he's read about things like that in stories before.]

"That is what I left to find out, for the wall that it rages against was built from the soul of someone very important to me."

... what will happen to them if the wall gets destroyed?

[Because that... sounds kind of ominous.]

"What usually happens when death is awakened by despair. Nothing good. That and the soul that made the wall will be destroyed with it."

She lets out a little breath and shakes her head, "And that is why I have left to figure out how to put an end to this problem just humans are so... Difficult."

Humans are difficult... but I think that's also part of what makes them so wonderful. It means they can think of all kinds of solutions to things that you might not ever have realized were possible at first.

"Yes. That is why we have always supported humanity and its evolution. That is why the simple solution is the worst solution here. Still in the end it is a colossal headache as well since humanity's potential swings both ways."

Maybe you could try guiding it in the way you want it to go. Not forcing it, but just sort of... helping it along. Help them realize that potential for themselves.

"Were I wiser perhaps, were I more connected perhaps. No, as things are I suspect I will need to find another who is those things and guide them far enough to weaken the beast to the point I can slay it."

[Emil tilts his head, thinking.]

That could work. Just find someone else who has the qualities you don't to help you. If you can't do it by yourself, I'm sure you could do it if you both helped each other out.

"Indeed. Isn't that how any fool progresses? At least, in my heart that is how I would like to believe one does."

... wouldn't that make them the opposite of foolish, though?

"Only if reversed. The fool is the arcana of the traveler, wide eyed and innocent they set out to understand the world, yet they are a fool as that quest will destroy their innocence."

I'm not sure I understand, but... are you saying they're a fool for setting out on the journey in the first place? Because of what will happen to them when they do?

"I'm saying they are a fool because they do not understand why they set out on the journey, not because they set out on it. They have an idea, or a question, but they do not know the full implications and trials needed to answer it. Yet they chase after it like a fool and either get lost on the way or come to understand the world a bit better in the end."

I don't know, I think it'd be worth it if they ended up understanding the world better, even if they made mistakes along the way. That's part of life, after all. Sometimes you can't learn how to do something the right way until you do it the wrong way first.

"And given my lack of understanding of humanity, and eventual mistakes, I do make myself a fool in many ways."

You too, huh?

"Indeed. I left the safety and purpose of the velvet room to save a soul and I am not entirely certain how to do so. Still, I keep trying."

I'm sure you'll be able to find a way if you're that determined. Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality, after all.
